The first in the second batch of Talwar class frigates INS Teg has completed final trials, the company’s spokesperson Sergei Mikhailov said on Tuesday . The construction of INS Teg missile frigate started in mid-2007 and was scheduled to be delivered by April 2011. The delay in INS Teg's induction is attributed to the funding and a accident it suffered while completing sea trials.
The Indian Government signed a $1.6 billion contract with Russia in Dec 2007 to build three more frigates of Talwar class also known as Type 1135.6 and Krivak III class - India already has three commissioned frigates of the same class, INS Tabar (Axe), INS Trishul (Trident) and INS Talwar (Sword). The primary difference between the current and the older ones is that the current frigates are armed with 8 Brahmos missiles each, rather than Klub-N missiles. Indian Navy officers were brought on board for training as reported before.
