INS Sahyadri to be commissioned on July 21

Shivalik ClassCome July 21st and the Indian Navy will commission INS Sahyadri, the third of the Shivalik class indigenous stealth frigates. The keel of INS Sahyadri was laid by Mazagon Docks Limited(MDL)in March 2003

Under Project-17 three ships were to be built by MDL, INS Sahyadri is the last under this project. INS Sivalik was the first under Project-17 and was commissioned on 29 April 2010 and INS Satpura the second of under this project was commissioned on 20 August 2011, all of the Project 17 ships are named after the hill ranges of India.

A follow-on project of the same Shivalik class namely Project 17A will see seven more warships built under this class.

Shivalik Class frigates have the following armaments

  • 1 x OTO Melara 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) Main Gun
  • 2 x AK-630 Rapid Fire guns
  • 32 x Barak 1 VLS SAM 
  • 24 x 9M317 (SA-N-12) Shtil SAM
  • 8 x VLS Klub or BrahMos Cruise missiles
  • 90R missiles (ASW)
  • DTA-53-956 torpedoes
  • RBU-6000 (RPK-8)
